Week 1 Down

Along with settling in with the fast paced city lifestyle accompanied by trying to figure out public transportation such as the metro lines and bus system, I had my first week of officially working a 9-5 job M-F in the Russell Senate Building, right in the heart of Capitol Hill. It truly is exciting being surrounded by brilliant minds and powerful people, in the area where most of the world's decisions are made. I have already learned more in my one week of work for Congress than I learned in the total of Professor Hedge's Legislative Politics class this past summer. I'm not undermining the class, Hedge is a great guy and I did learn a lot that is helping me with my daily duties here, but it is a fact that knowledge gained from experience is far more valuable than knowledge gained from a textbook. Seeing Congress work behind the curtains is truly an amazing opportunity and each day is filled with a new surprise. From dealing with constituents and their respective opinions to giving tours of the Capitol, to attending briefings and writing bench memos, there has not been a dull moment in the Senate. Although I happened to start the first day we are out of session, I still have found ways to keep me busy. What a great team behind Rubio and what a great country to live in. To many more weeks of prosper and living.
